چکیده

The effect of experimental long term hypodynamy on the structure of the adrenal glands of the Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica) was studied. Two days after hatching the quails were suspended in special shirts below the ceiling of a cage so their feet did not touch the floor. They could consume feed and water ad libitum. Animals of the same age, hatched at the same time, and fed the same diet were used as controls. Experimental animals were sacrificed after 14, 28, 42, 56 and 126 d of hypodynamy. Whole adrenal glands were fixed and routinely processed for transmission electron microscopy. The ultrastructure of adrenal tissue showed morphological changes in cortical and medullary – chromaffin cells. Lipid droplets accumulated in the cytoplasm of cortical cells and medullary cells exhibited marked cytoplasmic vacuolization. We assumed that the changes resulted in hypertrophy of the adrenal glands. Adrenal cells contained damaged mitochondria and dilated cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum. The morphological changes described were considered reversible. It has been supposed that the long – term hypodynamy an adaptation of the organism to stress would occur. Our results show that Japanese quails are capable develop under conditions of prolonged simulated weightlessness.

The Effect of Cadmium on the Ultrastructure and Metallothionein Levels in the Liver and Kidneys of Japanese quail

Background: The aim of this study was to use Japanese quail as an animal model to evaluate the effects of cadmium (Cd) on the ultrastructure and the activity of metallothionein (MT) in the liver and kidneys. Methods: One hundred male Japanese quails were randomly divided into two Cd and control groups in 2015. The first group received 100 ppm Cd for 60 days in their feed. The ultrastructural c...

The Effect of Long-term Exposure to Aspartame on Histomorphometric and Histochemical Adrenal Gland in Adult NMRI Mice

Abstract Background & aim: Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that has been used extensively in over 200 million people in more than 90 countries in various food products and pharmaceuticals. There are many controversial reports about the toxicity of aspartame on various tissues of the body. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the effect of long-term aspartame on histomor...

Adaptability of Japanese quail chicks to conditions of simulated weightlessness.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the adaptability of young Japanese quail chicks to the simulated weightlessness, represented by hypodynamy. Unsexed hatchlings were subjected to hypodynamy on either the first, second or third day of age and reared under these conditions to 21 days of age. During this period, the control quail chicks were housed in a floor box. The effect of hypodynam...

The Effect of Dietary Energy and Protein Levels on Growth Performance and Antibody Responses of Offspring of Laying Japanese Quails

An experiment was conducted to study the effect of metabolizable energy (ME) and protein of Japanese quails diets on offspring performance and antibody production against sheep red blood cell (SRBC). A total of 432 Japanese quails (13 week-old) were divided into nine treatments. Each treatment comprised four replicates of twelve birds (9 female and 3 male). Nine diets including three levels of ...

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of artichoke powder on performance and immune function of Japanese quails poisoned with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). One hundred meat type (1-d-old) quails were assigned randomly to 4 treatment groups (n=25). Treatment groups included with the study were: 1) control group (without artichoke supplementation or CCl4 administration, 2) group with...
